The History of Boothbay Harbor

In the early and mid-1600s, English farmers and fishermen settled in the Boothbay Region. The region also saw Pilgrims make their way down east to Damariscove Island from Plymouth after running low on food in 1622. They set up island and mainland settlements there until the late 1600s when wars forced them out. In 1729, Scotch-Irish families resettled the area and exported lumber, firewood, and fish. Over time, fishing and shipbuilding became the area’s leading industries. Around the 1860s, a regular steamer service was established, which brought reliable transport to Boston, Bath, and Portland. This helped create a summer tourist boom in the 1880s.

A great way to learn more about Boothbay Harbor’s history is on a walking tour. Throughout town, there are several key buildings and locations that played a role in shaping the town into what it is today. The Museum in the Streets highlights these spots.
