Smuggler's Cove

For some, there’s nothing more relaxing than a day out on the water. Planning a getaway to Smuggler’s Cove Inn means aquatic adventures are all around you. The possibilities are endless, from exploring Linekin Bay on one of our kayak rentals to going on a whale-watching tour. For a truly relaxing experience, set sail on a Boothbay Harbor schooner.

What Is a Schooner?

Before telling you about these incredible boat tours, knowing what a schooner is is important. These boats are sailing ships rigged with two or more masts, typically characterized by having the foremast shorter than the mainmast. This setup helps them be faster and more maneuverable than other types of traditional sailing vessels.

Fun fact: one of Boothbay Harbor’s leading industries for years was shipbuilding. In addition to recreational and commercial boatbuilding, the town also produced naval vessels for World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. In fact, there’s still a company making boats in East Boothbay today! Find pieces of Boothbay’s maritime history and other nautical items at East Boothbay Trading Co.

What to Know About These Boothbay Harbor Boat Tours

Boothbay Harbor Sailing has two incredible vessels: Schooner Eastwind and Schooner Applejack. These boats set sail from Boothbay Harbor from late May to early October and have several cruises to choose from.

  • Eastwind’s Day Sail lasts about two hours and takes you past Maine’s coastline, lighthouses, fishing lobstermen, and remote islands.
  • Applejack has a day cruise that also lasts about two hours. However, this option is not for children under five or adults with mobility issues.
  • For something a bit more romantic, try the sunset sail version of both the above charters.
  • Experience a 4th of July fireworks show from the water! The fireworks sail is a popular excursion, so we recommend booking your spots as soon as possible.
  • You can also book a private sail, a great option for large groups like family reunions or weddings.
