A Guide to Maine Lighthouse near East Boothbay

There are over 60 lighthouses in Maine, and some of them are just a short drive away from your Boothbay Harbor lodging. These structures once served as a beacon to sailors. While many are now decommissioned or automated, they have become an integral part of the Maine coastline.

  • Ram Island Light Station, found just south of Boothbay Harbor, was commissioned in 1883. For the best views of the 36-foot tall landmark, you’ll want to pass between Ram and Fisherman’s islands.
  • Built in 1821, Burnt Island Lighthouse is one of the most visible lighthouses in this area of Maine. Visit the working lighthouse on one of the seasonal living history tours. You can only reach Burnt Island by boat.
  • Hendricks Head Lighthouse in nearby Southport was constructed in 1829 to help guide vessels up Sheepscot River to the shipbuilding center in Wiscasset Harbor. The lighthouse is now privately owned, but you can still view it from Hendricks Head Beach or on a local cruise with Cap’n Fish’s Cruises
  • If you are looking for a fun day trip, make the journey to Sequin Island Light Station, found just south of Georgetown Island. The original light station was commissioned in 1795 by George Washington.
  • See the lighthouse located on the Maine state quarter by visiting Pemaquid Lighthouse. The park is open seasonally from about mid-May through October. You can climb the lighthouse, constructed in 1827, weather permitting.
